The formal gardens at the Real Alcázar in Seville, Spain are extensive and impressive, even in winter. The Real Alcázar is a palace that has been used continuously by the rulers of this region since the Middle Ages. The palace features architecture influenced by both the Moslem leaders from ancient times as well as the Christian monarchs who followed. If you would like to read more about the architecture of Alcázar, please take a look at my previous newsletter, The Real Alcázar.
I took most of the photos below from the second floor walkway shown in the first photo. The walkway has arches on both the left and right sides and I saw formal gardens in each direction. These gardens are filled with trees, ornamental shrubs, walking paths and fountains.
Gardens are designed for many reasons: to provide beauty; please the senses with fragrance and sounds; attract bees and birds; provide fruit and other food; create a peaceful space for relaxation and reflection; or, sometimes to impress.
The scale of these gardens, which are best viewed from the palace’s second floor, is remarakable.
Do you have favorite public gardens in Portugal? If so, I would love to hear which ones you enjoy most.

Vegetarian Recipe Worth Trying
Most of the trees I could identify at Alcázar were citrus trees. I found this recipe for a vegan lemon olive oil cake and I’m going to give it a try.
Although my family loved our trip to Spain, we are thankful to be back home in Portugal.
