In preparation for an upcoming trip to Portugal, I’m reflecting on some of my initial food memories in this European country. In each city or town we visited, my spouse and I sought out plant-based dinners and, sometimes, fresh seafood. In Lisbon, we found the 26 Vegan Food Project, an elegant restaurant with so many tasty vegan options.
We made an early dinner reservation. To reach the restaurant, we went inside a building and then down a wide and long series of steps, so many steps. Lisbon is all about the steps, both indoors and out. Once we reached a lower floor, we went outdoors, crossed a small greenspace and entered the restaurant.
In my years of searching for and finding plant-based restaurants and cafes in cities where I traveled for work or vacation, those vegan dining spots were often casual. My spouse and I really enjoyed the sparkle and elegance of 26 Vegan Food Project.
I ordered the fresh pasta dish of the day, which was homemade ravioli filled with tofu and I believe sun-dried tomatoes. The ravioli had a light and flavorful vegan cream sauce. I ate the luscious pasta immediately and enjoyed every bite. On this day, I was thankful for a meal that was vegan, tasty and served in a timely manner.
In Lisbon, I always had room for dessert. The cobblestone streets, the long outdoor staircases, and the hills ensured I was usually hungry by the time we reached our destination. For dessert, I ordered the vegan chocolate cake. When the slice of cake arrived, it was dreamy, silky, and satisfying.
